Homophobic violence in Brussels: An ethnographic case-study
Supervisors: dr. Alexis Dewaele & prof. dr. Petra Meier
Researcher: Heleen Huysentruyt

This research project wants to understand the context of violence against LGB people in the city centre of Brussels. Psychological, physical, verbal, material, and sexual homophobic violence that takes place in the public and semi-public urban space are included.

The study will focus on Brussels’ LGBT neighbourhood and its surroundings. Applying participant observation and other ethnographic methods of data-collection, we will identify contextual elements that influence the incidence and aftermath of homophobic violence.

We will explore how these elements contribute to the dynamics of homophobic violence in the LGBT neighbourhood and its surroundings.
